Holy Week and Easter 2025

Join us for our most important celebrations of the year as we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Palm Sunday is on the 13th April and commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem before his arrest and death. Our Sunday morning services are at the normal times of 8:00am and 9:30am. In the evening there will be no service at St. Chad’s because we are joining our friends at St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s which is in Springwell.

Holy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will each have a service of Holy Communion at 7:00pm. These will be at different churches. Monday will be at St. Chad’s, Tuesday at St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s and Wednesday will be at St. Oswald’s Grindon.

Maundy Thursday is when we remember Jesus’ last supper. It includes foot washing for those who want it, to remember Jesus doing the same. After celebrating communion, the church is stripped bare and the blessed sacrament is removed to a side altar as we recall Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane and his arrest. The service begins at 7:30pm, and is followed by the church being open for private prayer until midnight.

Good Friday marks the day of Jesus’ death. Our main service begins at 3:00pm and it includes the reading of the Passion story and the veneration of the cross. In the evening at 6:30pm we will look back on the events of Good Friday as Jesus’ mother and disciples would have done on the first Good Friday.

Easter Vigil is held on Saturday 19th at 8:30pm. We begin in darkness listening to stories from the Old Testament as we await the Resurrection. After lighting the Easter fire and returning to church by candlelight, the Resurrection is proclaimed and we begin our Easter celebrations with the renewal of baptismal vows and Holy Communion.

Easter Day is the most joyous service of the year. We keep our normal service times of 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm.
